Half Day Fishing: Matagorda's Inshore Hotspots

Ready to wet a line in some of Texas' most productive inshore waters? Fowl Hooked Outfitters has you covered with this half-day trip that'll have you casting for redfish, trout, and more in Matagorda's fish-rich bays and flats. Whether you're a seasoned angler or bringing the kids for their first taste of saltwater action, Captain Kevin Cantu knows how to put you on the fish and make sure everyone has a blast.

What to Expect on the Water

This isn't your average boat ride – we're talking about a custom-tailored fishing adventure. Captain Kevin keeps a close eye on tides, bait movements, and weather patterns to decide where the bite's gonna be hottest each day. Some days that might mean drifting deep reef edges for speckled trout, other times we'll be poling across skinny water flats, sight-casting to tailing redfish. The beauty of Matagorda is its variety, and we take full advantage of what each season offers. Spring and fall are peak times, but there's quality fishing year-round if you know where to look (and we do).

Rods, Reels, and Tactics

Leave the tackle box at home – we've got you covered with top-notch gear suited for the day's targets. Expect to use a mix of artificial lures and live bait, depending on what's working. We might throw soft plastics for trout along grass lines, chunk cut mullet for big reds, or sight-cast flies to cruising fish on the flats. Don't sweat it if you're new to these techniques; Captain Kevin's got a knack for coaching anglers of all skill levels. By the end of the trip, you'll be working those lures like a pro and reading the water like a local.

Top Catches This Season

Matagorda's inshore waters are home to some real bruisers, and every season brings its own highlights. Here's what's been keeping our rods bent lately:

Species You'll Want to Hook

Redfish: The bulldogs of the flats, redfish are the marquee species in Matagorda. These copper-colored beauties can range from 20-inch "rat reds" to bull reds pushing 40 inches. They love to cruise shallow water, often revealing themselves with their signature tailing behavior as they root for crabs. The fall "bull red run" is legendary, but you can find quality fish year-round. Expect hard runs and impressive stamina – a big red will test your drag and your biceps.

Speckled Trout: Also known as spotted seatrout, these speckled beauties are prized for both their fight and their flavor. They typically range from 14 to 24 inches, with gator trout pushing 30 inches not unheard of. Specks love to hang around oyster reefs and deeper channels, often feeding aggressively on shrimp and baitfish. Their soft mouths make for an exciting fight – you've got to finesse these guys to the boat. Spring and fall are prime time, but winter can produce some true giants for those willing to brave the cold.

Southern Flounder: Masters of camouflage, flounder are ambush predators that lie in wait on the bottom. While they might not win any beauty contests, they more than make up for it on the dinner plate. Fall is the prime time to target these flatfish as they move towards the Gulf to spawn. Drifting live bait along channel edges or working a jig slowly across the bottom are go-to tactics. Landing a doormat-sized flounder (24+ inches) is a real accomplishment.

Black Drum: Often overshadowed by their redfish cousins, black drum are hard-fighting fish that can reach impressive sizes. Smaller ones (under 10 pounds) are excellent eating, while the big boys can push 50 pounds or more. They love crustaceans, so fresh crab or shrimp are top baits. You'll find them around oyster reefs and in the deeper holes of the bay. Their powerful, thumping strikes and bulldog fights make them a blast to catch.

Why Anglers Keep Coming Back

It's not just about the fish – though they're a big part of it. Matagorda offers a slice of old Florida right here in Texas. Pristine beaches, endless marsh mazes, and water so clear you can sight-cast to fish 50 yards away. Then there's the wildlife: dolphins, pelicans, roseate spoonbills, and if you're lucky, maybe even a manatee sighting. Add in Captain Kevin's local knowledge and easy-going style, and you've got a recipe for an unforgettable day on the water.

The Fowl Hooked Difference

What sets this trip apart? For starters, we take care of everything. All the tackle is provided, so you don't have to lug a bunch of gear. We'll clean and bag your catch, so you can go straight from the dock to the grill (or to your favorite local seafood joint – we can point you to the good ones). Families love us because we know how to keep kids engaged and excited, even if the bite slows down. And for you serious anglers, Captain Kevin's always got a few tricks up his sleeve to put you on that personal best.

Before You Cast Off

A few quick things to remember: Bring your Texas fishing license (we can help you get a temporary one if needed), sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen – the Texas sun doesn't mess around), and any snacks or drinks you want for the trip. Wear shoes that can get wet and clothes you don't mind getting a little fishy. Oh, and don't forget the camera – you're gonna want proof when you're telling fish stories later.

Time to Book Your Spot

Whether you're looking to bend a rod with the family, impress clients with a day on the water, or just escape the grind for a few hours of world-class inshore fishing, this Matagorda half-day trip delivers. Captain Kevin's calendar fills up fast, especially during peak seasons, so don't wait to lock in your date. Get ready to make some memories, land some lunkers, and see why Matagorda is quickly becoming the worst-kept secret in Texas fishing. Book now, and we'll see you on the water!

Learn more about the species

Black Drum

Black Drum are the heavyweight cousins of Redfish, often lurking around oyster reefs and mudflats. These bruisers can top 90 pounds, though we typically catch 'em in the 5-30 pound range. Spring's your best bet, when they school up to spawn. You'll know 'em by their distinctive croaking sound and whisker-like barbels. Black Drum aren't the prettiest fish, but they're fun to catch and tasty when smaller. We find 'em in brackish waters, from shallow flats to depths around 100 feet. They're not picky eaters – crabs, shrimp, and clams are all on the menu. Here's a local trick: use a piece of fresh blue crab on a circle hook. Let it sit on the bottom, and hold on tight when that rod bends!

Black Drum

Redfish

Redfish are the rockstars of our flats, with their copper-colored backs and telltale black spot near the tail. Most run 20-30 inches, but bulls over 40 inches aren't uncommon. You'll find 'em year-round in shallow bays, around oyster reefs, and tailing on grass flats – sometimes in water so shallow their backs are exposed! Fall's prime time when they school up to spawn. Reds are known for their hard-fighting spirit and excellent table fare. They'll hit just about anything when they're hungry, from live bait to artificial lures. For a real thrill, try sight-casting to tailing fish in skinny water. My go-to trick? A gold spoon worked slowly across a mudflat rarely fails to get their attention.

Redfish

Sea Trout

Sea Trout, or Speckled Trout as we call 'em, are a favorite target in Matagorda. These silvery beauties usually run 14-24 inches, with some topping 5 pounds. Look for them around grass flats, shallow bays, and deeper channels, depending on the season. They're most active in spring and fall, especially at dawn and dusk. Sea Trout are known for their soft, white flesh – perfect for a fresh fish fry. They're aggressive feeders and put up a good fight on light tackle. To land one, try working a soft plastic jig or topwater lure slowly over grass beds. Pro tip: on calm mornings, listen for their distinctive "pops" as they feed on the surface. That's your cue to cast!

Sea Trout

Southern Flounder

Southern Flounder are masters of camouflage, blending into sandy or muddy bottoms in our shallow bays and estuaries. These flat fish typically run 15-18 inches but can reach over 30 inches. We target them year-round, but fall brings the best action as they move to deeper waters to spawn. Flounder are ambush predators, so we fish slowly along dropoffs and creek mouths. They put up a decent fight and make for excellent table fare with their mild, flaky white meat. To hook one, try drifting with a live mullet or shrimp on a Carolina rig. My top tip: when you feel that distinctive "thump," wait a few seconds before setting the hook. Flounder often grab bait sideways before turning it to swallow.
