Consistent Redfish, Trout & Flounder Bites on Matagorda’s Shallow Flats
Matagorda Bay - Matagorda, TX
The flats around Matagorda are producing steady action as water temperatures rise and baitfish begin to push into the shallows. Anglers targeting Redfish are seeing solid results, especially during mid-morning outgoing tides. These fish are cruising the grassy edges and mud pockets in knee-deep water—perfect for sight-casting opportunities.
Soft plastics rigged weedless and live shrimp under popping corks are both getting results. The key is staying quiet and making long casts, especially on sunny, calm days. Redfish in the 22”–28” range are common, with a few oversized fish in the mix.
Speckled Trout are showing up along nearby shell flats and drop-offs. The early bite has been strong on topwaters just after sunrise, transitioning to soft plastics as the day warms. Drift fishing over scattered shell has been especially productive during light wind days.
Flounder are picking up along sandy guts and drains during high tide periods. Gulps and live mud minnows fished slowly near the bottom are yielding good bites, especially around grassy cuts.
Now is a great time for family fishing trips in Matagorda TX, as the action is consistent and the weather is mild. The next few weeks should continue to bring excellent opportunities as bait activity increases and tides stay favorable.
